Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost by 18 Runs

Match report Tranent visited close neighbours Preston Village for the clubs first outing in East Lothian since the initial game at Dunbar.

Tranent visited close neighbours Preston Village for the clubs first outing in East Lothian since the initial game at Dunbar. The game was played under the twenty20 format and again Tranent continued the policy of blooding new players to cricket by giving initial caps to Lachlan Bruce, Neil Craigmile and Luke Welsh.

After losing the toss the Villagers elected to bat but were soon wondering if this was the correct decision after Saravanan and Hoenigmann sent Dixon and Wickstead back to the pavilion. Good fortune continued for the Tranent side when Davis collected a brace of wickets and Saravanan collected an extraordinary catch at mid on to send the dangerous Dobie packing for a duck. This left the Village on 66 for 5 as Hawkins and Patterson attempted to steer their team to a respectable total. Welsh and Davis Cribbes had other thoughts though and quickly took another 3 quick wickets to leave the home side struggling at 95 for 9. Unfortunately the Tranent side were unable to collect the last wicket and the tail wagged quite a bit to leave the Villagers on 125 for 9 at the close of innings.

Tranent set about their innings only to lose Ray at 3 and Saravanan when the total reached 13. This enabled Tranent to set about the total with two old heads at the healm. Together Scott Russell and Neil Craigmile played aggressively to take the score to 75 before Russell was bowled. This again lead to a middle order collapse (See previous reports) with Bruce and Davis both departing for ducks. Thankfully for the Tranent side Chris Smith again batted sensibly with Craigmile reaching 98 and within touching distance of victory before Craigmile departed attempting yet another aggressive shot. Unfortunately for Tranent the innings momentum had now been lost and the innings ended 18 runs short of victory.

This was the first game in which Tranent competed at all aspects of the game and on another day may have won the game. The bowling unfortunately put too much pressure on the batsmen as the wide count of nearly 40 will testify. On a positive note Dave Cribbes, Luke Welsh and Paul Davis all collected their first wickets for the club.

Champagne Moment: Saravanan’s extraordinary one handed catch at mid-on.

MOM: Neil Craigmile for an attacking innings and a very economic bowling spell.
