Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 3rd XI v Morton II on Sat 29 Apr 2017 at 13:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost by 112 runs
Match report
The new season brought some fresh faces to Tranent CC 2nd IX for the opening game of their ESCA Division 6 season against Morton II’s. Tasked with opening the bowling alongside stalwart John Barrett, youngster Gregor Brunton made early inroads into the opposition batting lineup by clean-bowling opener P. Elliott, and also whipping the bails off at the non-strikers end to run out the new man after a sharp piece of fielding at mid-on by Colin McMillan. Morton looked in trouble at 12-2, but the batsmen dug in and added another 54 runs before the third wicket partnership was ended by James Griffiths, getting a ball through the gap between the bat and pad of skipper A. Farrell. One further wicket from James two overs later had Tranent believing that they could claw their way back into the game, but another excellent partnership for the fifth wicket saw the opposition build their lead to the 200 mark. Spirits were lifted however when a late flurry of wickets, one each for Douglas Brunton and John Barrett and another to Gregor's tally, reduced Morton to 210-8 after their 40 overs.
The Tranent response was led by openers Mike Brunton and Colin McMillan, but a confident start was ended when Colin chipped a catch square of the wicket. Mike would soon follow after being given out LBW and in truth the home side’s innings never really took off from that point, despite determined batting from Saurabh Sethi who deserved more for his extended stay at the crease. Other encouraging contributions again came from the Brunton brothers, who are starting to look like real prospects for this Tranent side, but a steady procession of wickets meant that the home side’s total would fall just shy of three digits. There was however something for the Tranent players to cheer, when Gregor Brunton hit is very first boundary for the club, a sweetly-timed club straight down the ground which put many of the senior players to shame! A heavy defeat then to start the campaign, with much to work on over the coming weeks.
