Livingston II v Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 12:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost by 182 runs
Match report
With the First and Second XI fixtures both falling victim to waterlogged pitches, only the Tranent & Preston Village Third team saw any cricketing action at the weekend. They brought an inexperienced team to Livingston for their ESCA Division 6 encounter, hoping turn around what had so far been a rocky opening few weeks of the season.
After losing the toss and being asked to field, TPVCC made early inroads into the Livvy batting lineup. A sharp piece of fielding by Colin McMillan at point conjured a run out when the man on strike called an ill-advised single, and after opening bowler James Griffiths had pinned a brace of batsmen LBW, the opposition were left in a spot of bother at 33-3. However, following a 4th wicket partnership of 87 runs featuring some massive hitting from Livingston skipper Neil Jarvis the batting side were right back on track. Even two quick wickets from Richard ‘Cobra’ Knight couldn’t stem the tide as the home side sent out big hitter after big hitter and although seam bowler Andrew Punton chipped in with two wickets of his own during a superb spell of death bowling (helped out by an excellent steepling catch by Shine at long off), it couldn’t stop Livingston from posting an imposing 234 from their 40 overs.
Facing a daunting run chase, TPVCC couldn’t have made a worse start when opening batsman Colin McMillan was bowled by just the second ball of the innings. He wouldn’t be the only batsman to be undone by the incredibly quick and accurate bowling from the Livvy openers either, as they combined to take 4 wickets for just 15 runs within the opening 4 overs. What followed was a steady procession of batters from the visiting team, with only Cobra Knight showing any resistance to the bowling onslaught, making a gritty 20 before holing out to Neil Jarvis at fine leg. With him went any chance Tranent & Preston Village had of picking up a batting bonus point, and they slumped to a disappointing 52 all out, losing the game by 182 runs.
