Maccabi v Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club TPV XI on Tue 31 May 2016 at 18:00
Match was Tied

Match report After losing the toss and being put into bat, TCC made a watchful start to their innings against the Maccabi opening bowlers who were a genuine handful on a typical "Meadows" wicket. Just when it looked like Aatish had done enough to see off the opening pair he fell for a gritty 9 to an absolute jaffa which pitched on middle-and-leg and hit the top of off. Saurabh and Adil then took the fight to the bowlers before a mistimed drive saw Saurabh superbly caught at Point. That bought Don to the crease for his first innings with the club, and he immediately showed his class with a display of power hitting that was no match even for the long Meadows boundaries and typically slow outfield. His brutal 43*, ably supported by Adil, would be enough to see TCC post a competitive 85-4 after 18 overs.
Aatish and Josh opened the bowling for TCC and Maccabi made a very confident start, but it wasn't too long before the wickets started to fall with Josh brilliantly pegging back the off stump of a Maccabi opener. A change of bowling brought Saurabh on, who generated some real turn from the dry meadows wicket and slowed the Maccabi march to a crawl. Though they were still ahead of the required run rate, Saurabh took two wickets in two balls to bring TCC right back into the game - the first a fizzing delivery which tied the batsman in knots and crashed into middle stump, and the second a towering top edge well caught in the late evening sun by newly-appointed skipper Sam. Unfortunately the hat-trick was not to be, with the new batsman surviving an LBW shout that can probably best be described as “optimistic”.
One further wicket from Pradeep’s two excellent overs ensured that TCC were now well into the tail. With Maccabi needing 11 from the last four overs DK and Aatish, who both deserved to be in the wickets, produced a truly outstanding spell of death bowling to leave our opponents needing 2 from the last ball to win. With glory in mind the batsman threw the kitchen sink at a length delivery from DK but didn't time his shot and the ball burst agonisingly through the hands of the Cover fielder. The batsmen ran through to tie the score before setting off for a suicidal second that would have won the game, had the ball not already found itself in the hands of bowler DK standing over the stumps who duly removed the bails (and conceded just 9 runs from his 4 overs!).
A really fun game and great team performance. Played in good spirits by all, a tie felt like the right result in the end.
