Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 3rd XI v Penicuik III on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 13:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Won by 140 runs

Match report TCC 3rd XI made their second trip to Gyle park in the space of 8 days to find (to the batsmen’s relief) a very different outfield from the one seen in the game against Royal High, with short grass and little to stop the ball racing to the boundary. Their opponents were a Penicuik 3 side desperately seeking a first win in 2016.

As TCC openers Mike and Scott made their way to the crease in the bright Edinburgh sunshine hopes were high that the team would get back on track after a tough loss last week, and they immediately capitalised on some wayward bowling in the first overs before the Penicuik openers settled into a rhythm. What followed was a masterclass in disciplined run accumulation from both players, with Scott in the kind of attacking mood that can give a bowler fits including a huge six over the square fine leg boundary. Penicuik rotated their bowlers and although their young attack kept things tight, the batsmen were rarely troubled during their opening stand of 100, before Scott was given out LBW for an impressive 68 to a speculative shout from the bowler. Mike soon followed after playing on to his own stumps for a very useful 35, and when Shine had his woodwork rearranged a few balls later TCC were in need of a rebuild at the 22 over mark. James Nicholson, playing with an injured foot made a quick-fire 14 before being well caught at backward square leg, bringing Sachin to the crease for the decisive partnership with Saurabh. After a nasty-looking injury to a Penicuik bowler (to whom we wish a speedy comeback!) they took the TCC score well beyond 150 and to a total which looked highly competitive.

Sachin and debutant Shine would open the bowling for TCC and before long the batting side were up against it, with the two strike bowlers making quick work of their top order. After Sachin removed one opener with a full-pitched brute of a delivery, Shine found his line to take two wickets in two balls (his first for the club) to put Penicuik under real pressure at 20-3. The first bowling change brought Saurabh on for a very impressive display and when a full delivery somehow found its way onto the stumps via bat, pad, boot, or maybe a combination of all three, it was the wicket that his spell richly deserved (even if the ball itself didn’t!). The bowlers were rotated but the stumps continued to be clattered with regularity; once on a brilliant line from Gregor Brunton and twice more by Sachin, who was largely unplayable during his 6 overs (for just 8 runs!), ensuring that the game was effectively over as a contest. All that was left was for Douglas Brunton to put the game on ice with a delivery that pitched on a perfect length and cleaned up the tail end batsman.

A highly impressive win for the thirds which sees us up to 4th in the division!
