Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost

Match report Match report for Tranent CC's initial game. Hosted by the friendly bunch at Dunbar CC.

Tranent Cricket Club were formed only a matter of months ago and played their first game on Saturday against Dunbar at Hallhill. The Tranent club have established a healthy fixture list for this summer with approximately 30 games being arranged. Unfortunately all these games will be away from Tranent as the club have as yet to establish a home for the club due to a lack of suitable playing areas within and around the town.

The game had looked in doubt due to poor weather however Saturday provided ideal conditions for players and spectators alike. Upon winning the toss Dunbar elected to bat and made use of the perfect batting conditions. Joe Ray and Saravanan Manoharan opened the bowling for Tranent however the duo enjoyed no luck until, Ross High pupil, aiden hoenigmann pouched a good catch at third man to send Callow back to the pavilion. The second wicket was soon to follow with Manoharan and Hoenigmann doubling up again this time to end Binnie’s innings. callum mcintosh, Willie Weatherhead and young Hoenigmann all tried to dislodge the Dunbar effort but unfortunately Dunbar accelerated to reach 200 by the drinks break at 24 overs. After the break Tranent introduced the spin of Scott Russell and Royal John and were rewarded with a succession of wickets which curtailed the hosts hopes of reaching 300. Dunbar eventually reached 290 all out but Tranent could take heart from a solid fielding performance although the wide count of over 60 was a bit high.

After the interval Joe Ray and Paul Davis opened the innings for Tranent and the run chase looked on after Ray crashed a brace of sixes in the first over. Indeed the second over went the way of Tranent too as the score moved to 23. Unfortunately the 3rd over proved to be the turning point as Ray skied a pull only to be caught behind, Zain Chaudry, another Ross High Pupil, departed without worrying the scorebook and Paul Davis played down the wrong line only to see the timbers tumbling. Over the next 6 overs Dunbar cleaned out the Tranent middle order leaving only Hoenigmann and John between them and victory. Unfortunately for them the Tranent schoolboys had not read the script and set about slowly bringing respectability to the Tranent total. After forming the partnership on 38 the duo manipulated the Tranent total to 70 before Hoenigmanns stumps were broken, this leaving John on an unbeaten 27.

The result caused no surprise as Dunbar are an established East League team and many of the Tranent XI had never played before. The Tranent side would take many positives from this game and with many more games to come this summer will hope for improved performances that will lead the club to joining the East League at some point in the near future.
