Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost by 82 runs

Match report Tranent CC entered the Thursday fixture with Musselburgh CC with some confidence following the recent near loss to Preston Village. Unfortunately this confidence was ill founded as the Musselburgh XI were too strong in every department.

Tranent offered a debut to David Bathgate and it was the Port Seton man who opened the bowling innings with Royal John. Unfortunately for the pair they found the Musselburgh openers keen to establish an early lead and had 47 on the scoreboard by the 5th over. Tranent changed the bowling attack with Neil Craigmile who struck twice in his first over thanks to a steepling catch at mid-off by Craig Adams and another regulation catch behind. Unfortunately the good fortune was short lived as Musselburgh had taken the score onto 92 before the next wicket fell. It was Adams who struck collecting a wicket in his first over and collected a second minutes later in his second over. Callum McIntosh, Willie Weatherhead, Mark Brown and Neil Patterson were unable to add to the wickets despite tight bowling spells. It was not until the final overs of Luke Welsh and aiden hoenigmann that Tranent had success again leaving Musselburgh on 131 for 6 after their 20 overs.

Neil Peters and Hoenigmann opened the inning for Tranent but both were out before a run had been scored. Matters were not to improve as John was caught without scoring as well before Patterson ran out McIntosh without scoring and Craigmile ran out Patterson again without scoring. It was not until 5th over that Craigmile managed to score the first run off the bat but this was Craigmiles only contribution to the score. Bathgate and Adams were next in with Bathgate collecting yet another zero for the Tranent side and Adams top scoring with 2 before departing. This left Tranent on 10 for 7 and Scott Russell and Mark Brown at the crease. Thankfully the pair gelled and runs began to flow taking Tranent to 45 by the 19th over. At this point Weatherhead replaced the retiring Russell only to be outdone by the pace and movement of the Musselburgh attack. A returning Russell and Brown eventually took the total to 49 for 9 by the close.

This was a valuable lesson for the Tranent side as Musselburgh bowlers attacked with both pace and accuracy, more so than the Tranent team had faced before. On the bowling side the Tranent team restricted themselves to only 6 wides, a huge improvement on Tuesdays fixture and yet again the only catching chances were taken.

MOM: Mark Brown for scoring a personal best of 7 not out on an occasion when the side desperately needed it.
