Dunbar XI v Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 1st XI on Wed 30 Jun 2010 at 18:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Match number 7 saw Tranent CC return to Hallhill to face Dunbar for the 2nd time. The first game resulted in a commanding victory for the hosts but the “Absolute Beginners” from Tranent have improved and Royal John, Captain for the day, was hopeful of a good team performance. Unfortunately the pre game news was not good as Neil Peters reported being stuck “In the City” and “David Watts” was a no show resulting in TCC playing with 10 men for the first time.

The bad fortune was to continue for Royal as he failed to win the toss but “When You’re Young” these factors have little effect and his choice of opening bowlers had Dunbar reeling at 20 for 3 after 4 overs. John showed experience beyond his years as he continued to change bowlers never letting the Dunbar batsmen settle. During these changes John McNamara and Zain Choudhry claimed their maiden wickets for the club. Royal masterly re-introduced his opening bowlers of Saravanan and Callum to bowl at the death and was rewarded with McIntosh taking a brace and Saravanan collecting four wickets, only conceding a miserly 9 runs. Royal admitted that this was a good “Start” but in “The Modern World” it was unacceptable to bowl so many wides.

Royal decided on a steady course for the batting opting for himself and Scott Russell to open but he admitted “That’s Entertainment” after the opening partnership scored 41 off the first 4 overs. After Russell temporarily retired Paul Davis and Laclan Bruce added some “Precious” runs to the total taking Tranent to 82 with 7 overs remaining. Saravanan added quick runs but time was running out for Tranent as 15 was still required from the final 3 overs. Saravanan untimely decided to give up his wicket as did McNamara leaving Tranent sill requiring 9 from the last 7 balls. After looking hot favourites a matter of minutes before Royal was stating that a losing result would be “The Bitterest Pill (I ever had to swallow”. With the returning Russell now forming the last wicket stand with Willie Weatherhead the game was looking to be “Going Underground” but after five consecutive singles Russell drove a ball through the covers giving Tranent their first victory with one ball to spare.

Champagne Moment: Scott Russell's winning cover drive.

Man of the Match: Saravanan's bowling performance of 4 wickets for 9 runs.
