Bass Rock v Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 25 Jul 2010 at 18:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The Belters hit the coastal trail as they searched for some eastern promise at North Berwick, taking on Bass Rock at the Recreation Ground.
For two of the side, the coastal trail turned into a Max & Paddy style adventure as Callum & Mark decided to make good use of the lovely weather by going for a detour – towards Berwick! North Berwick / Berwick – nearly all the same dude, eh?!
As the teams gathered under the North Berwick Law, the Tranent team were caught gazing up at the wishbone on top of the hill hoping it would offer them some luck!
In to bat first were the depleted Tranent side who had 9 regulars and a debut for Miss Ellis Russell!!
Russell & Ray took to the crease in an attempt to guide Tranent to a win in this 30 over Sunday session and Ray was in good form, hitting a couple of boundaries early on. Unfortunately the big hitter went for one smash too many and was bowled by Baron on 19.
Zain came in to use his youth to compensate for Scotty’s experience (old age!) but the auld heid was dispatched shortly after as Barrie wiz too guid for him and bowled him for only 7.
Disbelief on the look of the Tranent bench as the run makers were once again out at the middle, but this time umpiring as traditional tail-ender Brown headed out with his bat.
And out he was. Barrie taking no time to deliver a tame effort but Brown’s inexperience showed and he was reunited with his camera within moments.
McNamara was to face a similar fate in the following over with Herd forcing the rookie batsman into offering a wee nick to slip. The catch was simply sublime from the mature fielder whose athletic prowess was worthy of a “You Tube” moment of fame.
Saravanan came to the party to join up with Zain who’d been through more partners than Katie Price on a night out by this stage. Could the big bowler deliver with the bat? A couple of cheeky singles saw the big man get the taste for more, but sadly his brain and legs weren’t incommunicado and a speculative dash to earn an unlikely single was only going to end in one result – yip, a run out!!
At 39-6, the Tranent tail wasn’t as much wagging but looking as docked as a Boxer puppy!
Adams, nursing an injury which curtailed much of his activity round the paddock the earlier in the week at Gifford, couldn’t handle ‘handy’ Andy Milne who took Lachlan’s wicket for a similar round score. So round, it was a big 0.
So, the final stand! McIntosh and Russell. No, not a return from Scotty, but a first class cricket debut for Miss Ellis Russell. It’s not very often the stumps almost tower over a player these days but the youngster looked resplendent in her gear, complete with trusty helmet.
McIntosh hit a solid boundary on his way to a PB with the bat of 7 but the plaudits went to his batting partner who had a solid display with the bat, knocking 3 singles out of the reach of the fielders to make herself joint 4th top scorer!
A grand total of 51 then for the hosts to beat as the sun broke through the clouds.
Laidlaw and Milne opened up the batting and Ray took the early wicket of Laidlaw for a single in the opening over.
Saravanan though was keen to avenge for his run out and he took the wickets of Milne, Baron and Barrie for a cumulative total of 2 runs!
Suddenly, things were looking up and with 4 batsmen down, could the unthinkable be thunk?!
In came the dangerous Herd and he was having fun swinging the bat around before the man deemed ‘pretty in pink’ (admittedly he has deemed himself that!) took out his middle stump with a deadly ball of little pace.
Sadly the rub of the wishbone from up above had dried up and Webb (8) and Ratley (15) put paid to any hopes of a comeback of Elvis Presley proportions from a Tranent side that can take lots of positives from the game played in top sportsmanlike spirit with big thanks to Bass Rock for loaning out a player or two and for the fine spread.
