Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 3rd XI v MDAFS IV on Sat 02 Jul 2016 at 13:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Won by 134 runs
Match report
TCC 3rd XI welcomed a MDAFS 4 side that sat just below them in the league to Cavalry Park, eyeing an opportunity to stake a legitimate claim for a promotion spot. After being put into bat by our opponents, Danny and Mike made their way to the middle but Murrayfield were able to make early inroads into the top order. After Danny was bowled, Aiden came and went leaving TCC in need of some stability and some runs on the board. Luckily once Richard had joined Mike at the crease the batsmen rarely looked troubled and the runs began to come with ease. Having seen off the opening pair of bowlers it became clear that our opponents were probably not at full strength, and the extras began to contribute heavily to the total. Not to be outdone by the wides column, Mike and Richard started to hit out; effortlessly knocking the singles, and dispatching any short balls (and head-high beamers) to the boundary. Eventually the “go hard or go home” approach ended Richard’s innings after he was caught at mid on, but not before making his top score for the club, and taking the Tranent total well past the 100 mark at the drinks break.
Unfortunately for our opponents the break in partnership did nothing to stymie the flow of runs, and after a short rain delay the Tranent batsmen carried on where they had left off. Scott had now joined Mike in the middle and the wickets column in the scorebook would not be troubled again, despite some very tidy bowling from the young T. Ritch. The return of the opening bowlers for the death overs slowed the rate slightly but by then the damage had already been done with Tranent finishing on 236-3 after 40 overs, Scott making a classy 40* and Mike Brunton (or is it Atherton?) finishing agonisingly short of his first century for the club on a brilliantly crafted 98*.
James and Aiden opened the bowling for TCC and kept the MADFS response in check with James bowling 5 maidens in a row, and Aiden taking a somewhat fortunate wicket with his very first ball when the batsmen directed the longest of long hops on to his own wicket. Saurabh replaced Aiden for the first change and continued to keep things tight before chipping in with two important wickets; one tempting the remaining opener down the track to be stumped by Scott behind the wicket, and the other inducing a steepling top edge from a batsman who had just begun to hit out in a big way. After James removed the new man LBW for 0, the game was effectively over as a contest with the opposition light years behind the required run rate. Taha and Gregor took over the bowling and both ensured that a comeback wasn't on the cards, before Richard took the reigns, well supported by Douglas, and settled the match with three wickets of his own. The first a mistimed shot caught by Sam at mid-wicket, followed by another smart stumping from Scott, and finally putting the game on ice by splattering the stumps when the last man threw everything he had at a straight ball.
The Thirds stay 3rd in the table, but the 4-game winning streak sees some daylight created between them and Morton in 4th.
