Morton III v Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 13:00
Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report With the holiday season in full swing it was a much-changed TCC Third XI which made the trip into the city for the game against Morton 3's, with two players making their debuts for the club. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, stand-in skipper James threw the ball in the direction of DK hoping for significant movement off the green Meadows wicket. After 10 overs of miserly line and length from the two strike bowlers, yielding just 11 runs, DK struck twice in his 6th over to remove both Morton openers LBW. From there it was a steady procession of opposition batsmen. Debutant Barry Cooper replaced James and took a very good catch off his own bowling, before Graeme produced a stunning, cat-like reflex catch at square leg, snaffling a well-timed flick at shin height to give Saurabh a deserved wicket. Not to be outdone, Saurabh then joined in the fun with his own piece of catching brilliance in the slips to give DK his third wicket. The fielding side were now cock-a-hoop, fielding tightly with confidence, and they punished some poor communication between the batsmen with two run outs in quick succession; the latter of which saw the back of Morton's biggest hitter, who had threatened to become a real handful. With the opposition well and truly up the creek on 40-7, new bowlers Paul and Salamat were tasked with ensuring that they did not find a proverbial paddle with which to recover. Tranent had eyes on being home in time for tea and with Salamat virtually unplayable, turning the ball square on the lumpy Meadows pitch and sending bails flying, the final three wickets fell in quick succession ensuring that Morton would be skittled for a very round 50.

With the TCC batsmen facing just 51 to win, there was a danger of complacency. But this was not a wicket or bowling attack to underestimate, and patience would be the key to a successful chase. David Thornton had other ideas though, launching his very first ball for a huge six back over the bowler’s head, before promptly bludgeoning another boundary back down the ground which sent the umpire and non-striker diving for cover. He was undone a couple of overs later however, when the Morton opener rearranged his woodwork with a ball that was full and straight. DK and Saurabh both came and went, undone by some impressively rapid bowling from our opponents first change, but with Colin playing the cool-headed accumulator at the other end TCC were always favourites to reach their target. When Colin finally fell in the 15th over he had seen the score progress to 42-4, and all that was needed was Salamat and Salim to knock the singles before the game was brought to an end by the second massive 6 of the innings, smashed this time over the deep midwicket boundary by Salamat.

A hugely enjoyable all-round performance by TCC, with great contributions from everyone on the field. Props must also go to Colin who kept wicket very successfully when no other volunteers came forward! With the win extending the streak to 5 games the Third XI juggernaut is rolling, and shows no signs of slowing down!
