Tranent and Preston Village Cricket Club News story

Weekend Round Up

09 Jun 2014

On Saturday Tranent hosted Heriots III at the Tranent Cricket Ground. Although Tranent are unbeaten this season Heriots have only lost one game and were hoping to inflict defeat upon the hosts bringing them back towards the promotion chasing pack.

With rain forecast for 4pm this would be a key coin toss to win and it was with no surprise that Heriots elected to field hoping to rout Tranent quickly and score the required runs prior to the rain.

Aiden Hoenigmann and Adnan Ali had other plans however and quickly set about posting a competitive score. Luck however was not on Ali's side however as he was well caught at gully early in the innings and Hoenigmann followed shortly after falling LBW. This however brought Sardar Fahim and Waleed Hassan to the crease and steadily they brought the inning under control. They surpassed 100 before Fahim fell to catch behind. This however only enabled Mark Anderson to get to the crease and he quickly found the Heriots medium pace bowling to his liking as he regularly found boundaries. After 28 overs the rain began to fall and with the game now going Tranents way the game was abandoned with the scoret on 150 for 4.

Elsewhere the 2nds were also abandoned in their game with Edinburgh South IV despite being in a positive position. The third XI however secured victory against Royal High Corstorphine IV thanks largely to an unbeaten 80 from Captain Neil Craigmile.

On Sunday Tranent ventured to Aberdeen to play Aberdeen Grammar School FP to play in the Quarter Final of the Scottish Small Clubs Cup. Tranent introduced numerous changes to the Saturday League side with the II and III XI's being well represented in the cup side.

Upon winning the toss the Aberdeen Grade 1 side elected to bat but were soon in trouble against the East League Division 6 side as Anderson and Hassan were bowling a fine line composed with the necessary level of aggressiveness. With the hosts being 34 for 3 after 12 overs Captain Ali introduced the changes with his own swing bowling and Nadeem's off spin. This change brought about more wickets for the Belters and the hosts were eventually bowled out for 95.

Hoenigmann and Craigmile opened for Tranent however Hoenigmann soon departed caught after a poorly timed shot. Fahim replaced Hoenigmann however was soon back in the pavilion after a couple of rapid boundaries. Next batsman in was Hassan who introduced composure to the innings and together batted steadily with Craigmile taking the score to 65 before Craigmile was caught. Unfortunately both Ali and Anderson fell in quick succession with the hosts now viewing an upset however this was not to be as Hassan and Paul Dance guided Tranent to a 5 wicket victory.

Tranent have now reached the semi-final of a national competition for the first time where they will now face another away game at Leith or Bon Accord (Aberdeen).
